HUM 111-112 - Great Books I - II (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces selected great works of philosophy and literature with emphasis on close analysis of the text. Lecture 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
Introduces the student to world classics in philosophy and literature through close analysis of the text directed discussions and essay.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
General college entrance competencies.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- analyze major texts in philosophy and literature
- discuss the historical, biographical, and cultural contexts
- trace existing recurrent patterns and themes
- recognize contrasting alternative perspectives among texts
Major Topics to Be Included
- Who is man; what is his destiny?
- What constitutes the good life?
- What values are associated with particular writers and particular periods?
- What significant themes recur in these great books?
- What major differences are found between individual authors as revealed in their various works?
- What forms of expression constitute the traditional genres in literature and philosophy?
